Walking Tour of New Ross with New Ross Street Focus
New Ross Street Focus took us on a trip with a difference around our historical town of New Ross in Wexford.
Promoting the history and heritage hidden in plain sight on the streets of New Ross, there are 18 blue plaques with historical facts on significant buildings around the town. New Ross Street Focus have published a free booklet and map for self guided tours and also offer a variety of guided tours by Myles Courtney who is an absolute fount of knowledge.
Our group chose between three guided tours;
- Medieval Tour
- 1798 Rebellion Tour
- Kennedy Footsteps Tour
All very interesting but we could only do one, so our members took a vote and the Medieval Tour came out on top.
We put on our walking shoes and started at the Maiden Gate in Irishtown, somewhere worth stopping and actually taking a look up and around rather than just driving through. So much history in one little place. Myles is a great story teller and his knowledge of New Ross knows no bounds. No detail was overlooked. We walked around St. Mary’s Church, took in the magnificent views, the local history and the stories of some of the amazing locals from over the years.
All of our members who went on the walk would definitely highly recommend it to both tourists and locals alike.
